Expectations create preconceived notions of results we should experience. Such notions kill peace when those expectations are not met.
The expectations we place on ourselves – or allow others to place on us – can be harmful. The expectations we impose on others are potentially even more destructive.
There is one expectation I’ll point out that is in harmony with peace. I highly recommend it:
Expect good things. When we consistently do this, good things follow.
Placing expectations on ourselves and others – or allowing others to impose their expectations on us – can invite discord. When expectations must be set, do so collaboratively with careful thought and extreme care.
(Note: My sincere, heartfelt thanks go to Masen for being the catalyst behind this topic. Although some three decades my junior, he helped me understand the damage well-intended expectations can cause. Thank you, my friend, for your patience and kindness in our interactions, and your strength in having a difficult, life-changing conversation with me.)
